Let’s Be Real: Networking Can Feel Awkward

Networking can feel awkward. You’re not alone in this feeling! You’re expected to introduce yourself, make small talk and sometimes even ‘sell’ an opportunity.

As a PR agency, we’re often guiding our clients on how to build relationships with media, customers and communities. But, we’re also a small, women-owned business (celebrating 30 years, smile). That means we’re regularly out there ourselves, creating our own opportunities and expanding our own circles.

So, when it comes to making meaningful connections, we don’t just talk the talk, we walk it. Here are a few best bets our team leans on to help networking feel a little more natural and a lot more effective.

Plant Yourself in the Middle

When choosing a seat at any event, aim to sit in the middle of the row. This naturally places you in the action and gives you the chance to strike up a conversation on both sides of you – doubling your connection options!

Lead with Curiosity, Not Your Resume

Great networking starts with listening. Instead of diving into your job title or talking about yourself first, ask thoughtful questions. “What brings you here?” or “What kind of projects are you excited about lately?” Instead of worrying about what to say next, focus on listening. More often than not, people are comfortable talking about themselves when prompted, and you’ll come across as genuinely interested.

Follow Up Like a Human

Ditch the copy-paste LinkedIn messages. Follow up with a short email note that is personal and specific: reference what you talked about, or share a resource that came to mind. It shows you were really listening – and that’s memorable.

So yes, while networking can feel strained at first, it can get easier with time. And remember, it’s more than just exchanging business cards. It’s a powerful tool that can help you build strong relationships, both personally and professionally.
